'Why History Matters' is the result of a groundbreaking campaign in 2006, which saw over 1.2 million people pledging their support and getting involved in hundreds of events and activities across the country.
During the campaign, 'History Matters– pass it on', people from age six to 90 completed postcards describing why history matters to them.
Some see it as an essential survival tool for the 21st century, helping us cut a confident path through the confusions of globalisation. For others, it’s the key to defining our identity as individuals, communities and as a nation.
For many, history and heritage helps us to grasp where we belong and to make decisions about the future.

'Why History Matters', which was produced jointly by the National Trust, Heritage Link, English Heritage, the Historic Houses Association and the Heritage Lottery Fund, demonstrates that people of all ages and backgrounds have a passion for history.
In order to secure the benefits of history for future generations the National Trust is working with the heritage sector in calling on the Government to commit further investment in heritage so that it remains in good condition. We also want to involve more people in our work to help us make decisions about what matters and why.
